It is one of the major commercial hubs in Sri Lanka with about 144,551 inhabitants within city limits. It is approximately 35 km north of Colombo City. Negombo is known for its huge and old fishing industry, with busy fish markets and long, sandy beaches. Negombo is the most westernized, vibrant city and it is one of the major tourist destinations in the country. The main international airport of Sri Lanka is in Negombo Metropolis.

About the destination: The two neighboring resorts Beruwela and Bentota on the southwest coast form the center of tourism on Sri Lanka and are separated from each other by Bentota River. This is a kind of lagoon in the vicinity of the coast, where you can find the best conditions for windsurfing and sailing. In this region the most beautiful beaches of the island begin. The coast is a protective coral reef, so that the bathing is also possible with stronger sea. The local life can be seen on the fish market in the small town of Aluthgama, which is located between the two places.
