Many have rocky edge formations above them. Outside of Cancun we find Tulum, a unique site where you can go for a swim in turquoise waters and visit the famous ruins of Mayan civilizationCancun has lots to offer. About the destination: Holbox ("black hole" in Yucatec Maya) is an island in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is approximately 41.84 kilometres (26.00 miles) long and 1.5 kilometres (0.9 miles) wide, and it is separated from the mainland by 10 km of shallow lagoon that is home to flamingos, pelicans and other rich birdlife. Holbox Island is part of the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas and also part of the Yum-Balam Biosphere Reserve. Not yet heavily touristed, the island's main industry is fishing. However, the island is developing a growing tourist industry in the form of whale shark viewing. Lobster is the main product of this fishing, and many of the dishes made on the island center around lobster or other seafood.

And it is as mellow or as wild as you'd like it to be. Playa del Carmen is a great base for exploring all of the interesting places on the Mayan Riviera and the Yucatan peninsula. The island Cozumel, which offers some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving in the world, it's just a short boat ride away. The site of Chichén Itzá is 3 hours away, but it's definitely worth the trip! Although touristy Playa del Carmen is captivating and picturesque, full of small and charming Mexican shops and restaurants. This little city has so much to offer if you want it.

About the destination: Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatán Channel. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel. The islands belongs to Cozumel Municipality of the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. There are quite a few beach clubs that offer snorkeling and the main attractions are the reefs offshore and the multiple dive shops. Cozumel also offers several Mayan archaeological sites. The most extensive vestiges are those at "San Gervasio", an inland site a few miles north of the "Carretera Transversal" highway. Another site is located near the village of El Cedral, inland from the "Carretera Costera Sur" highway. In Punta Sur Park, at the southern tip of the island, there is the "El Caracol" temple, believed to have been used as a lighthouse by the Mayans.
