In Eventide, a much more modern and modern restaurant, the offer of oysters that welcome us as soon as we enter will leave us wanting to return. From Portland you can take a ferry to some island of Casco Bay, such as Peaks Island, where only 15 minutes from the capital seems to time slows down. About the destination: Acadia National Park is an American national park located in the state of Maine, southwest of Bar Harbor. The park preserves about half of Mount Desert Island, many adjacent smaller islands, and part of the Schoodic Peninsula on the coast of Maine. Acadia was initially designated Sieur de Monts National Monument by proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Sieur de Monts was renamed and redesignated Lafayette National Park by Congress in 1919—the first national park in the United States east of the Mississippi River and the only one in the Northeastern United States. The park was renamed Acadia National Park in 1929. More than 3.5 million people visited the park in 2018. Native Americans of the Algonquian nations have inhabited the area called Acadia for at least 12,000 years. They traded furs for European goods when French, English, and Dutch ships began arriving in the early 17th century. The Wabanaki Confederacy has held an annual Native American Festival in Bar Harbor since 1989. Samuel de Champlain named the island Isle des Monts Deserts (Island of Barren Mountains) in 1604. The island was granted to Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac by Louis XIV of France in 1688, then ceded to England in 1713. Summer visitors, nicknamed rusticators, arrived in 1855, followed by wealthy families, nicknamed cottagers as their large houses were quaintly called cottages. Charles Eliot is credited with the idea for the park. George B. Dorr, the "Father of Acadia National Park," along with Eliot's father Charles W. Eliot, supported the idea through donations of land, and advocacy at the state and federal levels. John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed the construction of carriage roads from 1915 to 1940. A wildfire in 1947 burned much of the park and destroyed 237 houses, including 67 of the millionaires’ cottages.

About the destination: Jackson is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 816 at the 2010 census. Jackson is an elegant resort area in the White Mountains. Parts of the White Mountain National Forest are in the west, north and east. Once consisting of several large land grants by Colonial Governor John Wentworth, the town was first named New Madbury, after the seacoast town of Madbury. In 1772, a road was built through Pinkham Notch, and the area was first settled in 1778 by Benjamin Copp and his family. In 1800, the community was renamed in honor of President John Adams, who was then in office. The name Adams stuck until the town was incorporated in 1829, when Andrew Jackson, the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, was inaugurated president. Governor Benjamin Pierce, a staunch backer of President Jackson, was influential in changing the name to Jackson. Only one vote was cast against the switch.

About the destination: The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a compact slice of New England wilderness, where jagged peaks, deep forests, and historic small towns come together in a landscape that feels both dramatic and welcoming. Dominated by the Presidential Range and Mount Washington—home to famously wild weather—the region offers sweeping vistas, winding scenic byways, and a strong sense of outdoor heritage. Whether you’re driving the Kancamagus Highway in autumn or waking up to snow-dusted peaks in winter, the scenery is the main attraction. Outdoor enthusiasts will find something to do in every season. In warmer months, hike sections of the Appalachian Trail, summit 4,000-footers like Lafayette or Moosilauke, or opt for family-friendly walks to waterfalls such as Arethusa Falls and Diana’s Baths. Mountain bikers and road cyclists will appreciate winding backroads and forest trails, while rivers like the Saco and Pemigewasset invite paddling, tubing, and swimming. When the snow arrives, the area transforms into a ski hub, with resorts like Loon, Cannon, Bretton Woods, and Attitash offering alpine runs, Nordic skiing, and snowshoeing. Beyond the trails and slopes, the White Mountains are rich in classic New England attractions. The historic Mount Washington Cog Railway climbs to the summit for panoramic views (weather permitting), while the Conway Scenic Railroad offers leisurely rides through valleys and over old trestle bridges. Families gravitate to theme parks such as Story Land and Santa’s Village, and to natural wonders like the Flume Gorge and Lost River Gorge. Throughout the region, covered bridges, general stores, and small-town main streets provide a charming backdrop for browsing local crafts and sampling maple products. Base yourself in towns like North Conway, Lincoln, Littleton, or Jackson, each with its own character and range of lodging—from rustic cabins and campgrounds to cozy inns and full-service resorts. Dining highlights local comfort food: think hearty breakfasts, craft breweries, and farm-to-table restaurants featuring regional produce. Plan ahead for peak foliage in late September to mid-October, and be prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather at any time of year. With a mix of adventure, scenery, and small-town warmth, the White Mountains are an ideal escape for both quick weekends and longer explorations.
